When I was growing up, I spent most of my life in Arizona. My parents decided to first put me in an English school in an attempt to make sure everyone in my family received the best education possible. Later on, because of my hearing problem, I became the only one in my family to be moved and attend a bilingual school. My parents decided to put me there so I could grow up understanding both Spanish and English- the two most spoken languages in Arizona. Later on, in 2000, Arizona passed a law saying only English was to be taught in schools, however, I was allowed to continue with bilingual education because my parents filed a waiver. My older brothers and sisters were required to continue with just the English education though. I remember it happening because many people in Arizona thought teachers were not teaching English very much (Rovira). Others believed it should be banned because our founding fathers built America speaking English. But we forgot that the North America continent was already bilingual even before the English arrived, thanks to the Spanish colonies. Every year we hear more and more languages spoken more in the US, such as Spanish, Asian dialects, and European languages at the same time we speak English. Most American natives are worried English will disappear in a while, or a least not be spoken here. I protest the removal of bilingual education in public schools. Not because I am a Spanish native, but because it affects the education of the thousands of students who are not included, it affects the future and culture of every student in America. When I moved to Iowa during high school, I saw that not every school in the state offered bilingual education. Even though I already knew English very well, I still wanted to keep practicing my second languages in school. Some states do not offer bilingual education because they think it is not necessary to learn another language. The only bilingual classes they offer are the elective classes such as Spanish and French that are required to be taken for some colleges. But Iowa schools do not offer bilingual education in math, science, or history classes as they do in Arizona for several students. Schools should encourage students to learn a foreign language not because is required for colleges, but because it can help communication to other cultures that do not speak English at all. For example, Hattie Evan and her son hailed a taxi, but the driver did not speak English; her son speaks Spanish so he helped his mother to talk to him in Spanish. He spoke Spanish to him and told him the directions (Holloway). Learning another language is helpful, especially in an emergency moment.Learning another language is not going to affect proficiency in the English language. If the school teaches English and foreign languages with a good education system, they can become very successful. For example, Amistad dual school teaches students subjects first in Spanish, and then in English. Also, the school mixes the English natives and Latino students so they can learn from each other (Holloway). According to Kathryn Kohnert, English is spoken as second language globally. But in the United States, the foreigners speak English as a second language, while the natives of American speak English as first. But the native English speakers in the United States are trying to learn foreign languages such as Spanish, Chinese, sign language, or any other languages as a second languages (Kohnert). “For English speaking students, it helps them acquire a second language with relative ease and it places equal value on languages and heritages, which allows students to explore different cultures from an early age (Holloway). Learning a second language means opening up their horizons to the richness of cultural diversity and becoming active participants in today's global society (Rovira)."According to Lourdes Rovira, “the United States can no longer afford to remain a monolingual country in a multilingual world. Being bilingual and biliterate not only gives people a political and economic advantage, it also allows them to be bridges between people of different cultures”. For years, there has been a debate on whether or not to put bilingual education in public schools. "Most Americans look upon the English language as the number one factor that defines our national identity” (Schlafly). In California proposition 227 was passed, terminating bilingual education; it was sad day for the country ( Rovira). People of today should not be worried about English. Because English has been the most common language that has united the immigrants from all over the world (Rovira). We believe everyone should learn a language. Rovira mentioned the majority of the people outside of the United States are bilingual. We should not close the possibility of learning other languages because languages expand people's cognitive development (Rovira). In the article by Phyllis Schlafly, the president elect Barack Obama, mentioned that instead of worrying about whether immigrants can learn English, we should focus on our children speaking foreign languages. He also mentioned that it is embarrassing when Europeans come here and can speak fluent English, but when we travel to Europe we can’t speak their languages (Schalafly). Countries that are very well developed can speak English. For example, I went to Greece in 2006, every where I walk the people speak to me English and not the creek language. As conclusion, learning another language is something we should be proud to do for our self because we showing to the world we can be compete against others. Learning another is always a good option. People can get jobs more easily, especially that our economic is global everything is connected each part of the world. Here in the United States, we should be proud we can learn any language because we live in a country where thousands cultures live here. If we continue thinking that English only should be speak here. I believe that the language we die sooner than it will stay alive. For example, I believe the Latin language dies because it never changes during the medieval ages. We must keep mixed English with foreign language to keep it alive. We can still be proud to be American and still speak seven languages. We must show the world that we still the United State is still the leader on education.
